Perfect Match – the ideal photography client

Since I am an outdoor photographer, winter is typically a slow season for me. I use that time to do all of the behind-the-scenes business stuff that needs to be done (hello tax return prep) but I also do tons of education and networking. I’m a member of a few different groups of successful and talented photographers, and we constantly encourage AND challenge one another in our businesses.

This week’s group assignment is to write a paragraph or two describing the characteristics of your ideal photography client…one who would share your vision and style…one that you would just click with…one that would be a perfect match and thrilled with the type of images that you create.  The reason is that once you know your perfect client, then you can create the perfect products and services FOR THEM. So here I go!

My clients typically:

-Place a priority on their family life. They are captivated and humbled by the beauty of their children, and they want to remember that beauty forever.

-Are computer and internet-savvy, and they know how to use and share digital files. They are comfortable with technology, and they use their smartphones to do a lot more than chat! They are used to fast access to information. They hate it if they can’t find pricing on a website. They are generally on social media.

-Do research for good quality and value, but they do not automatically go for lower price. They try to save money whenever they are purchasing consumables such as groceries, or kids play-clothes, so that they can conserve their spending for brands that offer something distinctive and valuable. They are style conscious but not necessarily trendy; they know what works for them.

-Focus on relationships, not pretenses. They generally have a tight circle of friends whom they socialize with. They tend to rely on product recommendations from their friends rather than trust advertising.

-Are very home-centered. They decorate for comfort, peace, simplicity, and function. They are parents and their home is cozy and lived-in, not an untouchable showplace. They enjoy their home as a refuge from work and their busy lives. They love color, texture, and clean simple style. They are just as likely to display groups of smaller family photos that they update frequently, as they are to get a large canvas of that “perfect” image.

-Love DIY projects as an outlet for their creativity, not because they are “cheap”. They enjoy Pinterest but don’t really have the time to do too many projects. They love creating gifts such as calendars or photo books from their digital files.

-Love photography and frequently photograph their own family in a lifestyle manner. They place a high priority on regular professional family photos to document their memories, and they know how important it is to actually BE IN THE IMAGES. They don’t want their images to look like snapshots or amateurish, because they know their children deserve great pictures. Many of my clients have gone on to start their own photography businesses, but they still return to me to get images from someone that they trust.

– Prefer outdoor, casual, and relaxed portraits to formal studio portraits. They absolutely don’t want the “everyone in white shirts & blue jeans” look. They want good sharp and clear images of their children’s faces and beautiful eyes, and they don’t want excessive props or costumes (they are perfectly capable of taking their own pictures of their kids sitting on hay bales next to pumpkins themselves). They want me to capture them being themselves, and they love that I pose them quickly and flatteringly. They don’t want to stress about their session, and if they are going to the time and effort to get everyone ready, they want to make sure that they get a good variety of superior images out of it.

Once I wrote all of that down, I thought about my current clients and realized that almost all of them fit this description to a tee! I am so glad that I took the time to actually get this on paper, because it will help guide my business to truly meet the needs of my clients as well as their desires.
