We enjoyed spending Thanksgiving weekend at my daughter Stacey’s house, and as always I was trying to think of ways to get Genevieve & Gavin to agree to pose for me and actually cooperate. In the past I have tried all of the usual strategies – bribing with candy, or agreeing to play their favorite game, or taking them to the playground, or even (gasp!) small toys – with mixed results. You just never seem to know when they will be in the right frame of mind.
We tried on Friday to get some family shots for their Christmas card, and it wasn’t really happening. They were cold and whiny, and made pitiful sad faces every time I snapped the shutter. With the help of Jim and the grace of God, I managed to get two where they don’t look tortured, out of 50.
But on Saturday morning, I accidentally stumbled on something that worked – pennies!!! I asked Gavin if he would pose & smile for me if I took his picture, and he said “no”. Then I asked him if he would do it if I gave him a penny. He thought about it and said “one smile”. I asked him if I gave him two pennies, would he give me two smiles? He said “yes” and then all of a sudden I could see his brain click – if he smiled ten smiles, he would get TEN pennies! Maybe a hundred smiles for a HUNDRED pennies!!! Genevieve then wanted in on the deal, and I was able to do a little quick session with each of them. They didn’t last for a hundred smiles, but the twenty I got were the best gift ever. Ever!
