I’m so proud of our niece, Sara Miller Greene, who has just published her first children’s book “Love For A Lion“. I want to share with you the story behind the book, in Sara’s own words:

“This book was written especially for children who have been adopted, are living in foster care or in another family situation where not everyone looks the same.   I have drawn on my experiences as an adoptee growing up in a family where I was the only African-American.   I was given up at birth by my biological mother who was at the time homeless, single and the mother of another small child.  This was in rural Ethiopia in 1973.  At 3 months of age I was adopted by Mennonite missionaries and we returned to the US a few months later at the end of their 3 years of service.  Life was not always easy growing up in Philadelphia where, looking back, many of the neighborhoods or streets were still segregated by race.   My family lived in Germantown on a predominantly African-American block.  There were only 4 white households that I remember. They all lived in a row. I am sure they stood out and I know I did because I was “smack-dab-in-the-middle” of them.  I remember getting so many disapproving stares which confused me as a young child because my family was simply that…my family. Many times I just wanted to blend in and not be different.  I wanted to hear someone to say, “you look just like your mother” like I heard others say of my sister, my parents only biological daughter.   But 40 years later, I know one thing for sure, you can run from your purpose but you can’t hide from it. I have embraced the fact I must be a voice to and for interracial and trans-cultural adoptees.  My adoption was not planned and it was not something that happened very frequently in those days as it does today. As an older “sister” to those children being adopted now, I hope that I can provide a series of books that is a reflection of their lives and families.”

Please consider purchasing the book for someone you know or donating it to your local school library so the story can be shared with those who need it.   You can find it here:
