Highlands NC Couples Photography Session Turns Into Surprise Engagement Session
I don’t really do many engagement sessions any more, preferring to focus my business on families and extended families. But when Russ contacted me about doing a session for he and his girlfriend during a much-needed weekend getaway at The Old Edwards Inn in Highlands, NC I couldn’t resist. ESPECIALLY when he told me that, unbeknownst to his girlfriend, he planned to pop the question during said weekend! Diana had always wanted to visit The Old Edwards Inn and the area around it, and Russ thought it would be a perfect place to create such a special memory.
Diana had also always wanted to have some great photos of the two of them, and so he did a little internet research on photographers and found me! I was available, so we were set. As we were talking about the particulars of the session, I asked him if he wanted me to capture photos of the actual proposal. He was a little hesitant about how that would work, because understandably it was an intimate and personal moment…not one that should have a relative stranger with a camera standing right there. But he also thought photographs of the moment would be treasured by them in the future. I assured him that I had a long lens that would allow me to be pretty far away from them, so that they could still have their privacy. We came up with a plan for the particulars, and when the day came it was bright and sunny and perfect for our plan.
I met them in the Highlands, and we started out doing a few photos just around town. At this point Diana thought we were just doing a regular couples photo session because they were in such a beautiful place.
Of course we drove to Dry Falls, which they had never seen…
And then we headed to the covered bridge, where we had planned the Big Moment. My signal was to pose them, tell them that I forgot a special lens from my car and to hold that spot for a moment until I got back. Russ would keep her attention until I got set up and signaled him.
I don’t know what words he spoke to his love, but her beautiful smile lit up the bridge and her attention was all his.
And then he dropped to one knee, with ring in hand….
It didn’t register at first…I heard her say “wait, is that a ring?!”
She looked over at me questioningly, like “is this a pose?” 🙂
Then it finally sunk in what was happening…and she said YES!
Wishing these two a long and happy life together! Congratulations Russ and Diana – may all of your dreams come true!
